Born in Venice, Gianni Biolo joined the University and medical community in Trieste starting in 2002. In 2012, he became the Director of the Clinica Medica at Cattinara University Hospital. Biolo is a specialist in internal medicine and endocrinology, with extensive experience and training in the U.S. (Texas), France, Denmark, and the Netherlands. According to the AD Scientific Index, he is among the top 3% of scientists globally in terms of citations and H-index, ranking first in his subject at the University of Trieste, and within the top 3% nationally and worldwide. His research spans internal medicine, with particular focus on metabolic disorders in acute patients, including muscle atrophy, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, type 2 diabetes, and physical inactivity. Biolo collaborates with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and European entities to study nutrition in long-duration spaceflight and microgravity conditions (International Space Station missions). His involvement includes bed-rest studies related to metabolism, insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, and nutritional interventions. Experimental methods used include stable isotopic tracers and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. He heads a research lab at the University of Trieste, where medical students and researchers undertake studies—such as on glutathione metabolism during simulated inactivity (bed rest) and in sepsis. He holds the position of Associate Professor of Internal Medicine (Università di Trieste) since 2002. Biolo served as an Associate Editor for the journal Clinical Nutrition since 2006 and was Chairman of the Scientific Committee of ESPEN (European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism).
