Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmaco-nutrition

Filippo di Girolamo is a researcher in Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmaco-nutrition (SSD 05/G1), focusing on the pathophysiological alterations of glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism in both acute and chronic conditions. His work investigates these metabolic changes as pharmacological targets, modulated through innovative drugs such as PCSK9 inhibitors, statins, and bempedoic acid, as well as nutraceuticals including amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, and alkalinizing agents. A distinctive feature of his research is the application of stable isotope tracer methodology to study in vivo metabolic kinetics, thereby enhancing the translational impact from experimental models—such as bed rest, sepsis, and cachexia—to clinical practice.

In the hospital setting, he contributes to the Drug and Therapeutics Committee (ASUGI) and participates in multidisciplinary cardio-nephro-metabolic groups. His role integrates pharmacovigilance and pharmacoeconomics to optimize therapeutic decision-making, with particular attention to balancing risk/benefit and cost/benefit considerations.

As a lecturer, he teaches Clinical Drug Trials in the School of Specialization in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (BIO/14), as well as courses in Diet Therapy and Applied Dietetics across Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, and Biological Sciences programs.

Filippo has authored more than 45 indexed publications (Scopus), with over 1,100 citations and an H-index of 18, achieving a cumulative impact factor exceeding 200. His continuous scientific output dates back to 2014. He has participated in more than ten competitive research projects at national and international levels, supported by EU/ESA programs, national grants, regional health system funds, and industry-sponsored studies, raising a total of over €800,000 in funding as Principal Investigator, Co-PI, or Unit lead.

He has received fellowships and awards from ESPEN and SINPE, and serves as an active reviewer for leading journals in Clinical Pharmacology, Internal Medicine, and Nutrition.
